What is the purpose of the Interactive Notebook?
The Interactive Notebook (IN) is a great place to ORGANIZE information given in class. The IN enables students to process ideas and make connections through gathering data, observing, forming questions, making sketches and participating in discussions. It's a place where students can express their thoughts, questions and display what they've learned or don't understand. The IN can be used as a formative assessment for the teachers and is a culmination of student work throughout the year.
The Interactive Notebook is a student thinking tool that helps develop their academic organizational skills by allowing them to improve critical thinking skills and having the ability to express their understanding creatively.
Information that is required in the IN is modeled from upfront. However, the students are free to add information, ask questions or creatively express themselves with additional content. I have an IN for each class and I'm working and sharing right along with the students. Please check your child's IN regularly. The IN contains their daily assignments, notes and on-going activities for science class. Asking to see their notebook allows you to see what we're studying in class and makes them accountable for getting their work complete.
